I have the honour to bring to your notice
tuet for a number of years past the equivalent in silver dol-
lars of £100 has been 1000 and not $ 600 as fixed by the
footnote to rule 66 of the Rules and Regulations of the Colo-
nial Service.
It seems therefore somewhat anomalous
that the provisions of rule 66 and of rule 83 which is go-
verned by the footnote above quoted should apply in this Co-
lony to appointments of which the emoluments are little more
than half the sterling value originally contemplated by the
rules in question.
2. Two cases have recently occurred here in
which two officers-Sanitary Inspectors-whose salaries were
64 and $ 80 a month respectively committed themselves by
drunkenness so that their dismissal became desirable. One of
them resigned and the other disappeared,it is said by drown--
ing,before his case could be enquired into.
